Environmental Education Center of Kleitoria
The S.E. end of Achaia, a former part of the Arcadian land, has been associated with the presence of mythological figures such as Achilleus, Appolo, Daphne, Hades, Pan, Thetis, Hercules as well as Artemis.
At the foot of the s.w. face of Mount Helmos, at the confluence of the river Aroanios and the river Ancient Cletor, at on altitude of approximately 520m. lies Kleitoria, with 1.000 permanent residents. It is the commercial and cultural center of a major area consisting of 16 communities and 5.500 inhabitants.
Schools of all levels are present, a students hostel, a health center, branches of the National and Agricultural Bank, a police station, a country court, a cultural club, and it is the capital of municipality Leykasiou. It is also among the very few communities with biological cleansing of sewage.
The Kleitoria Environmental Educational Center is situated in a 12 acre-area, full of eucalyptus trees and gardens, which in spring create some amazing combinations of colors.
The Kleitoria E.E.C. was inaugurated in July 1993 and it is the very first
Environmental Educational Center to be created by the Ministry of Education
aiming at:
-the realization by the students of the need in the right management and protection
of the environment
-the setting-up of pilot environmental educational programs.
-the creation of those conditions where there would be a rational management
of the natural ecosystem of the major area around the center in relation to
human productive activities.
-the publicity of the natural and cultural environment of the area.
-the sensitization of students and teachers towards crucial environmental problems
as well as the development of critic way of thinking
-learning about the environment in a playful way
-the cultivation of creativity during working on tasks about the environment
-and finally we aim at changing of attitudes and behaviors
The E.E.C for the fulfillment of its aims
-organizes 4-day and 3-day educational programmes for students and teachers
of primary and secondary education
-produces and prints informative and educational materials
-organizes training seminars for teachers
-organizes various activities within its scope
-informs various social groups about the problems of the area
-carries out scientific studies - research of the major area
-cooperates with various authorities responsible for environmental issues
-is setting up an archive and a library with stuff concerning the area as well
as environmental issues
Our aim is to make students realize the diversity of the environmental problems
A change in pupils' attitude towards the environment is promoted
The approach of the working team members is performed through dynamic self related
procedures.
The working team members explore the environment in a playful way, pose problems,
seek solutions, make suggestions and organize various activities.
Contrary to the school environment emphasis is given to open, exploratory procedures
